AMHERST, Ohio (WOIO) - EDITOR’S NOTE: The Amherst Teachers Association and Amherst Board of Education have reached a tentative agreement as of 10:48 p.m. Tuesday.

Below is the joint statement released from both groups Tuesday night:

“The Amherst Board of Education and the Amherst Teachers Association are happy to announce that we have reached a tentative agreement on all outstanding issues for a new, three-year labor contract. Although the specific details will not be disclosed until after ratification and adoption by the parties, we believe that this agreement is fair and benefits all of our District stakeholders. Representatives from the leadership of the ATA and Board expressed their belief that this resolution will continue to move the District forward in a positive direction.”

PREVIOUS COVERAGE:

The Amherst Teachers Association held a rally outside Marion Steele High School Tuesday in support of the bargaining team negotiating their new contract.

The teachers union and school board were back at the table along with a federal mediator, Tuesday night.

Community members, teachers from other districts, and some former students attended in support.

“I could not be more thankful for all the things my teachers have done,” former Amherst student Nicholas Glahn said.

Emily Marty, the spokesperson for ATA, was grateful for the show of support.

“What we do want is a fair contract that would not only retain the good teachers that we have here but also attract teachers to want to come,” Marty said. “I’m a parent, I’m a community member, and I want what’s best for the schools.”

ATA members have been working without a contract since June.

Last Thursday, they voted to authorize a 10-day strike notice.
